The FUBA Awards As They Happened.....

Afidra finally wins MVP award

Twelve years after he was first nominated for the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Isaac Afidra finally won the most prestigious award in local basketball.
Afidra beat two-time winner and DMark Power teammate Ben Komakech to the 2011 MTN-Fuba League playoffs MVP diadem during the annual dinner at Imperial Royale Hotel on Saturday night.

Despite previously not awarding foreigners with individual accolades, UCU Lady Canons’ Kenyan centre Purity Adhiambo took the women’s gong. She helped her side sweep KCC Leopards 4-0.

Warrior’s Eric Malinga was named regular season MVP ahead of Stephen Omony (Miracle Eagles) but Ivan Enabu, also a Warrior, was controversially not nominated at all.

The other awards:

Best Rookie of the year : Nabisunsa's Joy Chemutai (18 years old)

Best coach : Bernice Ankunda (Powers).

FOOTBALL

Well in football as far as we are concerned, the FUFA-USL wrangles unfortunately dominate the headlines.

The SOS [Save Our Soccer] has filed a legal suit against the "so called" big shots in FUFA and the sued have a limited time to respond to the charges in the court hearing slated in a few weeks.

However on a light note, the second round kick off is still scheduled for 20th January, and of the 15 clubs its only Proline that have turned a deaf ear in as far the USL and television right owners demand.

Still in soccer, the Crested Cranes seek to lighten up a seemingly dark path the womens football has been unfortunately exposed to.
The African Women Championship two-legged tie match is due tomorrow as the Crested Cranes host DR Congo in Nakivubo at 4pm.
It's such a tough ask especially considering the fact that the last time the Crested Cranes were competitively involved in action was in 2000.
Coach Nantanda Majidah, believes that the two months of training especially in the technical, tactical and psychological development has been achieved.
We wish the Crested Cranes the best of luck.

Crested Cranes vs DR Congo in Nakivubo Stadium [14th January 2012]

Ug Shs. 5000 [All Men]
Ug Shs. 10,000 [Pavilion]
All ladies the entrance is free

BASKETBALL

The Blick brothers have crossed over from Miracle Eagles and have joined the Mountain Dew Falcons. There a saying that goes, where Norman Blick goes Donald follows. One of my colleagues joked that when buying the Blick's, buy one you'll get on free.
Last year undoubtedly has been a tough year for the Falcons, the demise of their founder John Ssimbwa, and the docking of the points following the transfer deal of a one Phillip Ameny from Kenya.
The move see's the strengthening of the Falcons who already have Richard Osano, Dulla among others.

Congratulations to Purity Adhiambo, the UCU centre who won the Nile Special-USPA Female Basketball Player of the Year.

On a sad note though, the DMark Power forward, Ikong Joseph [Jersey 14] and his young brother Omedo of Giant Stormers, lost their dad earlier in the week after a battle with lung failure. May his soul rest in peace.

27th January is the date set for the annual FUBA gala.
